Acknowledgement of country
We acknowledge the Kaurna People as the traditional owners and custodians of this land. May we walk together in harmony in a spirit of reconciliation.
We are an Anglican church in the Anglo-Catholic tradition with a contemporary and progressive outlook. We seek to be a living community of faith which values relationships, liturgy and preaching to sustain our faith and action in daily life.

Our Mission is to be an active, caring and supportive Christian community. You are welcome at St Theodore's ‘as you are’, embraced within God’s boundless love. Not everyone here believes exactly the same thing and we don’t expect that you will agree with everything we do and say.

A church community is always made up of people with differing views and beliefs about certain things, a place where we can respectfully and enthusiastically seek truth together, a place where we hope that you will feel at home. If you have any questions about our community or faith, please contact our priest, the Rev’d Dr Matthew Anstey.

A glimpse into our community life

“From the first time we walked through the doors we were warmly welcomed. The community is outstanding, friendly, engaging and genuine! We travel regularly and also love that we can watch the services online either live or at a time that suits us.

St Theodore's is a gentle place of worship and praise.”

Your questions, answered

Welcoming answers for every journey

Wondering about our worship, community, or how to get involved? Explore these common questions, and remember—you're always invited to reach out if you need more guidance.

What is a typical service like?

Our Sunday 8.00am and 9.30am services at St Theodore’s are grounded on a rich history of Christian worship. This includes prayers said together and hymn singing, readings from the bible and preaching, recognising each other as a community in Christ and celebrating Holy Communion where we share bread and wine.

There are times of silence. At the 9.30am service there is also a ministry of anointing with oil during Holy Communion. At the entrance of the church there are candles and stones for use are two prayer stations. We follow the church calendar, based on the seasons of the Christian year, and we also intentionally connect to what is happening in the wider world, such as recognising National Volunteers Week, IDAHOBIT Day, NAIDOC, and so forth.

What if I have faith questions?

St Theodore’s encourages a curious, questioning faith, valuing wonder, searching for meaning and purpose, and a sense of being part of God’s universal love for all creation and all humankind. At St Theodore’s, we tend to see ourselves as being on a faith journey, so we all have questions, and yours are welcome too.

We welcome conversations informally or more formally as desired. There are opportunities for study during the season of Lent and other times. Some parish leaders are involved in ministries exploring spirituality in various ways. Sessions are held on a regular basis and promoted in the pew sheet. We try not to give ‘answers’ based on ‘certainties’ which are not really answers at all.

Are children and families included?

Yes! St Theodore’s church has a special area for families with children near the entrance. This includes low profile tables and chairs, paper and pencils, books and toys for play. Every quarter we have a special Sunday service at 3.30pm called ‘Breaking Bread’ which focuses on families with children.

'Breaking Bread’ has a special focus each time, such as The Blessing of the Pets (October) and a Christmas Eve Service (December) and other activities. Breaking Bread is run in collaboration with families from St Peter's College and other local Anglican schools.

How can I get involved?

Coming to one of our two Sunday services, joining online for the 9.30am service or attending in person and joining in morning tea after 9.30am can be good ways to begin. You are welcome to join the weekly email list which provides a reflection and information on what is happening.

During the notices in church and the weekly pew sheet, you will see various ways to become involved including a monthly working bee, a monthly women’s morning tea (at various cafes) and other social events. Parish members contribute to various aspects of Sunday worship and opportunities are expanding. The parish hosts a range of community organizations on site, providing opportunities for more general community involvement. Our facilities are available for hire at various times. And yes, there is a ‘bottom line’ – we welcome occasional or regular contributions to enable the life of St Theodore’s to be financially sustainable.

Is everyone truly welcome here?

St Theodore’s is a welcoming community, with members living locally as well as traveling from other parts of metropolitan Adelaide, attracted by our style of worship and community. People with different viewpoints are encouraged to coexist. People who seek and love God’s inclusion and diversity are attracted to St Theodore’s.

We are actively working on aspects of welcoming, such as people with a physical disability, with a ramp at the entrance to the church and a plan to develop disability access toilets. In recent years, we have intentionally focused on including people who are LGBTIQA+. We are one of several Anglican churches around Adelaide associated with the Anglican Rainbow Network.

How do I connect with someone?

Our Priest, Reverend Dr Matthew Anstey is available for contact as needed. Our two Wardens and members of Parish Council are also good points of contact.

Some contact numbers are provided in the weekly pew sheet. You can ask anyone in the parish and mostly they will know who you can talk to if you have any questions and/or would like to become involved in particular ways.

Is there anything else you can tell me about St Theodore’s?

There is so much more we could share, and here are a few of them: we have a regular parish magazine ‘Tidings’ which provides articles on various aspects of our life together; the ‘Community Spiritual Garden’ and ‘Memorial Gardens’ provide places of beauty, peace and rest. We have a monthly Meditation Service and host ‘Hearth Gatherings’ sessions for spiritual nourishment. There is an occasional ‘Spiritual Journey Group’ for those who wish to reflect on the readings and preaching. And more…

The Memorial Garden

Situated behind the eastern wall at the back of the church building, the Memorial Garden is intended for the interment of the ashes of members of the congregation and their immediate families, although the criteria can be extended to people who have other associations with the parish. The ashes are interred in a grid system on the lawn in the garden and there is a corresponding plaque affixed to the wall. The garden is a lovely place for quiet reflection.

If you have any questions about the Memorial Garden, or wish to make an application for an interment site, please direct your inquiry to the Parish Priest (Rev’d Dr Matthew Anstey) at the Parish Office in the first instance.
